Cosmetic Safety

I stumbled across the cosmetics database yesterday that ranks how hazardous your cosmetics and other products are to you. I have not stopped looking up my products since yesterday. It's addicting and also a little freaky??! It makes me wonder how far I want to go to actually cut hazardous products I love out of my life. How can I part with Clearasil Daily Face Wash after clear skin for the last 3 years?? My life is, all of the sudden, full of difficult choices. It is interesting (and not surprising) to note that some of the brands I would consider to be more "natural" and "organic" actually have higher hazard ratings than some of the more mainstream brands. Beware - if you have a tendency for OCD issues about health/chemicals, this website could put you over the edge.

yeah, most of the things i use are like, 6's. but its hard enough to find things that work. i'm taking this website with a big grain of salt!

true. also the products with higher numbers usually have some combination of fragrance and/or sunscreen. which of course is more chemically, but what are you supposed to do if you need sun protection??? i feel like this was created to respond to the over-reaction of new mothers (found it on a mom blog that swears by it).

you know, i blame this all on the proliferation of whole foods in the suburbs of america. we now have all these new moms who seem to think anything with chemicals = harm to their families. hello...they swim in pools right? which are full of chlorine, and that is a chemical. so just because you buy your kid all-natural shampoo, you're not avoiding everything that is "potentially" harmful. it just seems like this whole generation of little Madisons and Braydens are going to be complete freaks when it comes to worrying about the chemical content of everything thanks to sites like this.

disclaimer: i have nothing against whole foods or their actual food, it's just this phenomenon that's so annoying. what do you think?

also - nice graphic. where do you even find stuff like this?

agreed. i actually heard a little commentary on like, NPR, or something about this phenomenon. in the era of germaphobes, chemical-a-phobes, and helicopter parents, he was talking about how he would hitch a ride on the back of a garbage truck when he was little and how that wouldn't fly at all these days.
I have a feeling these are the same parents that don't vaccinate their children, resulting in the spread of whooping cough and other stuff like that.
